A Closer Look at Kuningan: The "City of Horses" at the Eastern Gate of West Java

KUNINGAN – Located at the eastern edge of West Java Province, Kuningan Regency holds geographical charm, crucial historical footprints, and a strong cultural identity. The region, whose administrative capital is in Kuningan District, plays an important role as one of the main eastern gateways into West Java, alongside Ciamis Regency, Cirebon Regency, Banjar City, and Pangandaran Regency.

Geographically, its location is considered highly strategic. The center of government is situated approximately 137 kilometers east of Bandung City, 34 kilometers south of Cirebon City, and 225 kilometers southeast of Jakarta.

Its position in a border area makes it a meeting point for various regional cultures. To the north, Kuningan directly borders Cirebon Regency. Moving east and southeast, the region intersects with Central Java Province, specifically Brebes Regency. Meanwhile, in the south, Kuningan borders Ciamis Regency and Cilacap Regency (Central Java), as well as Majalengka Regency to the west.

A Silent Witness to History and Cultural Diversity

Reporting on the reality of Kuningan would not be complete without touching on its historical aspects. Kuningan is not just a geographical crossroad, but a region that has made a significant mark on the history of the Republic of Indonesia's independence. The regency is widely known both nationally and internationally as the site of the Linggajati Agreement, an important diplomatic milestone for the nation.

From a sociocultural perspective, this region also displays a well-preserved harmony of diversity. In Cigugur District, local wisdom still breathes deeply through the presence of residents who firmly maintain their traditions as followers of the Sunda Wiwitan indigenous belief system.

The Story Behind the "City of Horses" Icon

One thing that cannot be separated from Kuningan's identity is its legendary nickname: the "City of Horses". This icon is deeply rooted in the history of local leadership from the past.

The horse here is not merely an aesthetic symbol, but a form of respect for an animal considered to be the embodiment of "Si Windu". Si Windu was a riding horse highly renowned for its agility, belonging to the Arya Kamuning family. Arya Kamuning himself was a charismatic leader in the Kuningan region during the era of the Cirebon and Pajang Sultanates. It is the toughness and agility of Si Windu that were later immortalized as the breath and spirit of Kuningan Regency to this day.

Official Reshuffle: Kuningan Agriculture Dept Eyes 10% Surge in Rice Surplus for 2026 ‎

KUNINGAN – The Department of Food Security and Agriculture (Diskatan) of Kuningan Regency West Java Indonesia is setting a high bar for 2026. Refusing to remain stagnant, Diskatan Kuningan is targeting a 10 percent surge in rice surplus to secure the region's position as the primary food granary in the eastern part of West Java.

‎The ambitious target was directly announced by the Head of Diskatan Kuningan, Wahyu Hidayah, on the sidelines of a reshuffle and handover ceremony for echelon IV supervisory officials at the Diskatan Hall on Wednesday (Feb 25, 2026).

‎Wahyu used this organizational restructuring as a catalyst for his ranks to boost food production. He warned

that the changing of the guard should not merely be a bureaucratic routine, but must generate strategic maneuvers on the ground.

‎"Positions may change, but our commitment to food security must not weaken. Precisely with this leadership regeneration, our rice surplus target must become stronger, more measurable, and executable," Wahyu firmly instructed.

‎Diskatan Kuningan's optimism is well-founded. Over the past two years, the grain production chart in the "City of Horses" has indeed shown a highly positive trend. In 2024, Kuningan's rice surplus was recorded at 93,000 tons. This figure then sharply skyrocketed to reach 120,000 tons by the end of 2025.

‎Nevertheless, Wahyu reminded his subordinates not to be complacent with this stellar track record. The threat of a food crisis due to climate change anomalies, attacks by Plant Pest Organisms (OPT), and fluctuations in market prices and production costs still loom over local rice fields.

‎"We are not here simply chasing production numbers on paper. What is more vital is how to maintain supply stability and ensure economic protection for our farmers," he explained.

‎To realize the 10 percent surplus increase target in 2026, Wahyu demanded that the newly inaugurated supervisory officials immediately hit the ground running. Officials in the field are urged not to be sluggish in making technical decisions.

‎A series of tactical steps must be rigorously overseen, ranging from improving irrigation management and strictly monitoring planting schedules, to optimizing the Expansion of Planting Areas (PAT).

‎"There are three principles that the Diskatan ranks must hold firmly: think big, act fast, and ensure programs are completed with the highest quality. Challenges on the ground must be met with innovation, not merely excuses," said Wahyu.

KUNINGAN — The Cirombeng Bridge that connects Jabranti Village and Karangkancana Village in Karangkancana District, Kuningan Regency, West Java, collapsed due to a landslide on Saturday, April 8 2023, at 17.30 WIB. The bridge cannot be passed by two, four and larger wheeled vehicles.

The Chief Executive of the Kuningan BPBD, Indra Bayu Permana, said that this incident was caused by high rainfall which caused the Cirombeng river to overflow. This causes the foundation of the bridge to erode and eventually collapse.

“This condition has disrupted access between Jabranti Village and Karangkancana Village and cannot be passed by two-wheeled, four-wheeled and larger vehicles,” said IB, his greeting.

Responding to this, village officials together with sub-district officials, the TNI, POLRI and the Kuningan Regency BPBD have coordinated to deal with this incident quickly.

Village officials have also evacuated affected communities around the bridge.

Currently, what is needed urgently is an emergency bridge that can be used by the community to cross the Cirombeng river. The Chief Executive of the Kuningan BPBD, Indra Bayu Permana, appealed to the public to remain vigilant and be careful when crossing roads and rivers around the area.

The sources of information we got came from members of the Ciwaru Police and Jabranti village officials. The Kuningan BPBD continues to monitor and supervise the development of the situation at the incident location. (Nars/ source: https://kuninganreligi.com/)
